Doser

A Medisafe alternative that rings like an alarm

Doser rings a real alarm when a dose is due, even with your iPhone on silent or in a Focus, and rings again until you answer. No account, and a heads-up before you run out. Here's how it compares with Medisafe, Apple Health and MyTherapy.

The 8:00 test

  • A dose is due at 8:00
  • Your iPhone is on silent
  • You're busy and don't open the app

What each app does at 8:00, with the iPhone on silent

The same dose and the same muted phone, in four apps. For the other three, this comes from their App Store listings and Apple's support page for Health.

Sounds, even on silentNotification
  1. DoserOur app

    8:00Alarm rings
    8:10Rings again
    8:20Rings again
    8:30Rings again

Doser's default: it rings again every 10 minutes, 3 times, until you log, snooze or skip. You can pick every 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes, up to 5 times.

  2. Medisafe

    8:00Notification

Its listing promises reminders "even if your device is asleep", but doesn't say they sound on silent.

  3. Apple Health

    8:00Notification
8:30Follow-up, sounds if Critical Alerts are on

If the dose isn't logged after 30 minutes, Health can send a follow-up. With Critical Alerts turned on, that follow-up plays a sound even when the iPhone is muted.

  4. MyTherapy

    8:00Notification

You can snooze it, but we found no automatic follow-up if you don't log the dose.

Pick Doser if

a dose going unnoticed on silent is what worries you, and you'd rather not make an account.

Stay with Medisafe if

you look after the whole family's medicines, or you need an Android app today.

And the other two

Apple Health

Fine if your schedule is simple and you'd rather not install anything. It's built into the iPhone's Health app.

The reminder at dose time is a notification. Only the follow-up, 30 minutes later, can sound on silent.

Has

  • Reminds you again if you haven't logged it
  • Dose history
  • No account needed

MyTherapy

Good if you also track symptoms and measurements like blood pressure and weight, on iPhone or Android.

No automatic follow-up that we could find if you don't log a dose.

Has

  • Warns before you run out
  • Dose history
  • Report for your doctor
  • Family members' medicines
  • On Android too

Moving from Medisafe to Doser

  1. 1

    Note what you take

In Medisafe, write down each medicine, its dose and the times you take it.

  2. 2

    Bring them in

If your medicines are in Apple Health, Doser can read the ones you choose to share. Add any others in a few taps.

  3. 3

    Allow alarms

Doser asks once to use alarms. That's what lets a dose ring on silent.

  4. 4

    Turn Medisafe's reminders off

So each dose only rings once, from Doser.
