Subscription cost calculator

To see what your subscriptions cost in a year, bring each one to a yearly amount: monthly ones times 12, weekly ones times 52, every three months times 4, and yearly ones as they are. Then add them up. The calculator below does it for all of them at once, and shows the month and the day too.

A year counts as 52 weeks, 12 months or 4 quarters. Price changes during the year aren't included.

How to work out what your subscriptions cost per year

Put every subscription on the same footing, a year, then add. Here are the four from the calculator above. The weekly one is the surprise: 5 a week looks small and ends up the biggest.

Where to find every subscription you pay for

Almost everyone misses one or two. The usual suspects: yearly plans, and anything billed through an app store. Check these four places.

  • iPhone and iPad

Open Settings, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions. It lists everything billed through your Apple account, active and expired. Apple's guide

  • Android

Open Settings, tap Google, then Manage your Google Account, then Payments & subscriptions. Google's guide also links straight to your Google Play subscriptions. Google's guide

  • Bank and card statements

Go back a full year, not one month: a yearly plan shows up only once. Look for the same name and amount coming back every month, quarter or year.

  • PayPal

In Settings, then Payments, the list of automatic payments shows every business allowed to charge you. PayPal's guide

Monthly or yearly plan: which is cheaper?

Divide the yearly price by the monthly one. The answer is how many months you'd need to keep the service for the yearly plan to pay off. If you'll keep it longer, pay yearly. If you're not sure you'll still use it by then, stay monthly: a yearly plan you stop using in month four is the most expensive plan there is.

Example: 10.00 a month or 100.00 a year. 100.00 ÷ 10.00 = 10, so the yearly plan is cheaper if you keep it more than 10 months.

Let Spentio keep the list

A calculator gives you today's number. Then a price goes up, a trial turns into a paid plan, and the number is wrong. In Spentio you add each subscription once and it keeps counting: what they cost you a year, which one is due next, and which one just got more expensive.

  • Every subscription in one list, with what it costs you a year.
  • A reminder the day before a fixed cost is due.
  • Spentio tells you when a subscription starts charging more.
  • Bills and subscriptions come off before you spend, so what's left is honest.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate the yearly cost of a subscription?
Multiply what you pay by how many times it bills in a year: 12 for monthly, 52 for weekly, 4 for every three months. A plan at 12.99 a month costs 155.88 a year.
Is a weekly subscription 4 or 4.33 payments a month?
A weekly charge lands 52 times a year, which is about 4.33 times a month, not 4. That's why this calculator works through the year first: 5 a week is 260 a year, or 21.67 a month.
How do I see all my subscriptions on my iPhone?
Settings, your name, Subscriptions. That shows what you pay through Apple. Subscriptions you pay on a website or straight by card aren't there, so check your bank statements too.
How do I find subscriptions I forgot about?
Go through a full year of bank and card statements and mark every charge that repeats. Yearly ones are the easiest to forget, because they appear only once.
Does this calculator save what I type?
No. It runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. Close the page and the list is gone.
